Stephen Kankus appointed NYSERNet President

Syracuse, NY (July 8, 2019) – Stephen Kankus has been named president of NYSERNet.org, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving the data and networking technology needs of colleges, museums, healthcare facilities, primary and secondary schools and research institutions. The board of directors unanimously appointed Kankus to the position on June 13, 2019.

“It’s terrific when you find the right person with the right experience at the right time in the history of this organization,” said NYSERNet.net, Inc. board president and chairman, John E. Kolb, P.E., vice president for information services and technology and chief information officer at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. “Steve has proven over his long tenure with NYSERNet to have a deep understanding of higher education and advanced networking. We know that he will drive future innovations through strong collaborations with a dedicated board and the talented staff at NYSERNet.”

Kankus has been with NYSERNet since 1994, serving in roles including research associate, director of education services, director of operations, COO and interim president.

“Steve has both deep experience in regional research network operations and an astute view of how to best position NYSERNet to meet the dynamic needs of our members,” said NYSERNet.org, Inc. chairman, R. David Vernon, assistant vice president and chief technology officer at Cornell University. “The board is looking forward to working with Steve to assure we meet the needs of our expanding membership.”

Under Kankus’ leadership, NYSERNet will continue to advance the research and educational missions of its members by delivering a full range of customized, progressive, high speed, and affordable end-to-end data and networking technology solutions that exclusively supports research and education.
