1985: The vision begins
A group of visionaries from the state’s leading research universities and institutions join forces to build a high-speed research network.
1987: The first statewide IP network
The nysernet network is operational at 56 kbps, one of the first uses of TCP/IP outside the Department of Defense (DoD).
1989: The first commercial ISP
nysernet upgrades to a T1 backbone and spins off the first commercial ISP, PSINet.
2003: An international research hub
nysernet starts building the NYC optical network and establishes Colo@32 on the Avenue of the Americas.

2004: Statewide connectivity
nysernet acquires IRU’s optical network to provide statewide connectivity.
2007: Resiliency enters the chat
The nysernet Business Continuity Center (data center) goes live in Syracuse.
2014: Growth and expansion
The Syracuse data center expansion goes live. NYC Optical Fiber participants and sites double in number since the original build.
2017: North Country Expansion
Our reach extends to connect New York’s northern communities.
2019: Path to Virginia
Establishes a high-capacity link from New York to Virginia’s data hub.
