Scientists from University at Buffalo have taken a water purification technique from 2,000 years ago and made it into a modern solution to polluted water. The process utilizes solar energy to evaporate water, leaving behind contaminants, then cooling the water vapor into a clear liquid state. Through their research, the scientists were able to make the cycle significantly more efficient. The ancient approach has been turned into a relatively cheap technology that can deliver drinking water to areas affected by disaster.
The scientists collaborated with researchers in Wisconsin and China using NYSERNet’s R&E network to exchange data.
