University of Rochester Doctors Give Patient Sight

Doctors Mina Chung and Ajay Kuriyan of the University of Rochester Flaum Eye Institute have implanted a bionic eye in 71-year-old Khaleda Rahman. The device contains electrodes that pair with glasses that have light and motion-capturing technology, creating visual pathways. Born into a family with a hereditary eye disease known as Retinitis Pigmentosis, Rahman began losing her vision during her childhood. This advancement is a first in the state of New York and uses NYSERNet’s R&E network.
