A team led by researchers at Stony Brook University uncovered the structure of an enzyme that’s key to cell growth regulation and could be the key to treating cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

The functions of the enzyme nSMase2 have been well researched, but scientists haven’t been able to understand its mechanisms because they lacked a way to understand its surrounding structure. Using a new visual technique that shows nSMase2’s crystal structure, future research could discover how the enzyme is activated and how to inhibit it.

The team of scientists was able to exchange data over NYSERNet’s R&E network.
