In a recent study from RIT, researchers found that the outer edges of spiral galaxies are a very likely location of massive black holes. Through comparisons of supernova rates in the different types of galaxies, the scientists were able to determine that the outskirts of spiral galaxies are the area with the highest chance to develop black holes. According to the scientists, this makes them the ideal place to focus research on observing the collision of black holes and resulting gravitational waves.

The researchers were able to collaborate on the study using NYSERNet’s R&E network.
