Researchers design diagnostic system to rival the DSM-5 - NYSERNet

Researchers from Stony Brook helped to develop a new, more effective collection of standards for classifying mental disorders. Co-leading an international team with University of Minnesota and University of Notre Dame researchers, they designed a system to replace DSM-5. The diagnoses are classified under hierarchies rather than categories, while also focusing on the overlap between disorders and the different presentations of symptoms from individuals with the same disorder. The system also relies on scientific evidence, rather than decisions by committee.

The collaboration necessary to create the new diagnostic technique was made possible by NYSERNet’s R&E network.
