A University at Buffalo professor, working with the Cornell Cooperative Extension, developed a new method to measure the electrical conductivity of soil. By creating a soil map of a field, farmers learn the water holding capacity of each square yard, and are able to plan their irrigation and fertilizer distribution accordingly. Soil maps reduce the amount of water and fertilizer used and save energy. The newly designed system reduces the total time taken to map a field from a full day to 20 minutes.
