Portable drug testing tech in development at UBuffalo - NYSERNet

A demand for portable drug testing technology has lead University at Buffalo scientists to work with researchers from Fudan University in China. Through their collaboration, the team was able to develop a chip uses light to detect the presence of certain chemicals. The scientists were able to base their project off of a method called “surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy”, which is known for its extremely expensive cost and ability to quickly detect drugs. The newly developed chip has been designed using cheaper materials that allow the chip to remain functional for a long time, meaning the team has found the key to relatively cost efficient technology that will be able to test individuals that may be driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs.

The exchange of data between institutions was supported by NYSERNet’s R&E network.
