New study suggests a link between high blood pressure and Alzheimer's

University of Rochester neuroscientists and mechanical engineers report in a new study that the brain’s mechanism for removing waste is driven mainly by the pulsations of arteries. The change in these pulsations caused by high blood pressure also slows the removal of waste, which they believe could explain the association between high blood pressure and Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia among older adults and is defined by abnormal clumps and tangled fibers in the brain.

The University of Rochester is part of NYSERNet’s R&E network.
