A team of researchers at New York University have created automated techniques to identify ads that could potentially connect to human trafficking rings and lead them to public information from Bitcoin, the main method of payment for online sex ads. Scientists from NYU Tandon School of Engineering, U.C. Berkeley and U.C. San Diego are using this as a first step in the development of various mechanisms to aid police as well as non-profit institutions identify victims of human trafficking. The researchers presented their work at the Association for Computing Machinery’s SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining in mid-August, and will take advantage of NYSERNet’s R&E network.
