• Private Industry Contributions: The New York Telephone Company led the charge with $2.3 million, complemented by $600,000 from the Rochester Telephone Company, and additional funding from IBM and the Eastman Kodak Company.
• Government Support: Gov. Mario Cuomo symbolized New York’s commitment by presenting a $400,000 check on behalf of the state. The National Science Foundation (NSF) also provided substantial financial backing.
