The Dream of a Digital Thruway Became Reality: 40 Years of Connecting New York and Beyond

Believe it or not, there was a time when transferring data among institutions in New York state was considered revolutionary. How could that possibly be done? Before the internet was a household staple, building a “digital thruway” that would bridge New York’s universities and other institutions was something that innovators only dreamed of. Thankfully, in 1985, a group of visionaries came together to lay the groundwork for a more connected future. Forty years later, that dream is known as the New York State Education and Research Network—NYSERNet.org, Inc.—a nonprofit, membership-based organization empowering institutions to advance their missions through cutting-edge technology and collaboration.

Putting the Concept Into Action

Of course, the creation of NYSERNet was not an easy task. It took planning, brainpower, and the willingness to take a chance on something never done before. Early conversations between university leaders set ambitious goals for the proposed network: 1) connect universities digitally, 2) provide access to national supercomputing facilities, and 3) tie into the planned National Science Foundation (NSF) ScienceNet. This concept received widespread support, sparking a movement to turn the vision into reality.

Making the Impossible Possible

The early creators of NYSERNet recognized that a project of this scale could not succeed without collaboration. They brought together some of the brightest minds across institutions and organizations to pool resources, tackle challenges head-on, and demonstrate the fortitude required to make the impossible possible.

This group included individuals from state agencies, national organizations, and leading universities, each contributing their unique expertise to help define the technical framework and establish the operational foundation for the network.

Clearing a Path Forward

In June 1985, stakeholders gathered to refine their vision and define the roadmap for NYSERNet’s future. The group identified key use cases, established connectivity and bandwidth requirements, and explored emerging communication protocols. The energy in the room was palpable as this diverse group combined their intellect and determination to lay the foundation for what would become a historic achievement.

Celebrating 40 Years

Over the past 40 years, what started as a vision for a digital thruway has grown into a full-fledged superhighway. NYSERNet is not only a technical achievement but also a triumph of collaboration, ingenuity, and persistence. It has connected New York’s brightest minds and institutions, catalyzing advancements across research and technology that have shaped the 21st century.

This year, 2025, as we mark the 40th anniversary of NYSERNet, we celebrate the pioneering spirit of those who laid the groundwork for a more connected New York—and a more connected world. Their collaborative efforts remind us that great achievements often start with a bold dream, paired with the courage and collaboration to bring it to life.
