CUNY professors have designed a new way for vision-impaired and blind toddlers to walk safely. Their wearable cane creates a barrier at ground level that alerts toddlers to obstacles directly in their path, allowing them to walk and run without crashing into anything. Previous studies have shown that children younger than five years old are unable to successfully use a traditional cane, so the new design by the CUNY researchers is a major step forward in mobility assistance, as well as helping vision-impaired toddlers avoid developmental delays.
The CUNY professors were able to collaborate using NYSERNet’s R&E network.
