Cornell University researchers next spring will deploy 105 seismometers along a 435-mile stretch of the Alaskan coast in one of the largest geological studies of the region where the Pacific and North American tectonic plates collide. By collaborating with the University of Washington, U.C. Santa Cruz, Columbia University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of New Mexico and other institutions, the geologists plan to gather and widely share data about seismic activity in the region, where 90 percent of all U.S. earthquakes happen. The effort is funded by the National Science Foundation, and will take advantage of NYSERNet’s R&E network.
