Columbia University scientists are using new methods to study the impact of climate change on tundra life. By using an algorithm, the researchers are able to rapidly distinguish birdsong from other noises in the environment on audio recordings, allowing them to more easily estimate when migratory songbirds were arriving in large numbers. According to their findings, the new technique is an effective method for studying songbirds and other vocal animals that are otherwise difficult to tag with GPS or other tracking methods.
The scientists from Columbia were able to exchange data with collaborators from other universities using NYSERNet’s R&E network.
