Binghamton University scientists, partnered with Rutgers University, have been studying permanent ways to fix cracks in concrete. Rather than completely replacing old, crumbling concrete, the researchers were seeking smaller solutions with more staying power by using the human body’s ability to heal as a template. Through their work, they discovered a species of fungus that naturally grows to fill cracks and holes in concrete, preventing structures from falling apart. Although there are many tests that still need to be run, the scientists are hopeful that their findings will be a sustainable approach to America’s issues with infrastructure.
