Mount Sinai researchers uncover role of serotonin in brain cells

Neurocientists in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai recently discovered a surprise role for serotonin. The brain chemical is a neurotransmitter known for passing signals between neurons and is involved in the regulation of mood. The researchers now say it can also directly regulate gene expression inside brain cells. These findings may significantly affect how scientists regard the biological function of serotonin, and help to better understand brain disorders including addiction and neurogenerative diseases.
