Researchers at SUNY Upstate Medical University collaborated with colleagues at universities in China to provide evidence of a strong link between schizophrenia and the organisms in the digestive track. Gut microbiomes, found in the intestines, differ person to person. The study found that there is a vast difference in the makeup of microbiomes in people with schizophrenia from those without. Transplanting the microbiomes from individuals with schizophrenia into mice caused them to behave in a way similar to people with schitzophrenia, which the researchers believe shows promise of a new treatment for schizophrenia in the future.
