The New York University Tandon School of Engineering collaborated with Politecnico di Torino, Italy, to develop a more accurate mathematical model predicting the spread of disease. The model takes into account the social interactions between people, which tend to alternate between periods of latency and “bursty” episodes of activity. People spread pathogens at the rate at which they travel, and so the researchers worked to develop a time-varying model that incorporates the idea of “burstiness.”
