Researchers at the New York Genome center have collaborated with U.C. San Diego, Harvard University and MIT to develop an algorithm that can determine whether certain mutations that are hard to study could be involved in harmful conditions. These mutations, called short-tandem repeats, are usually overlooked, but the researchers believe that they could play an important role in the treatment of genetic diseases. This research was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Justice and gifts from Paul and Andria Heafy, and will use NYSERNet’s R&E network.
